Being a business traveler is not always easy. You are forced to sleep in an airplane seat designed by the devil himself, while constantly surrounded by a swarming crowd.
Too much time in an airport can suck the joy out of most people, and it can be hard to see any joy in air travel.
The increased security and the reduction in the overall service level of the airlines have made the flight a meaningless affair.
Before you leave
1. There have been a lot of rules regarding hand luggage, and it is almost impossible to find out what applies, as no airline has the same set of rules. Therefore, check the rules for hand luggage every time you fly with a new company and buy a luggage scale. If you weigh your hand luggage from home and check that it complies with the company’s requirements, you will not be charged extra fees at the gate. At the same time, you will have an easier time using all the space in your hand luggage, without having any doubts as to whether the luggage meets the requirements.
2. Choose your clothes carefully. To reduce the weight of your hand luggage, wear the heaviest item of clothing (weather permitting) so that it does not add to the weight of the luggage.
3. Be organized. Store your items in the same place as often as possible. When your charger, mobile phone, and computer have their place in the luggage, they are easier to reach and you have an easier time remembering their location. Also place all electronic items at the top, as they must be removed regularly – for example during all security checks.
At the airport
4. Choose the “right” queue when going through the routine security check. It may be a science to learn, but it will save you a lot of time on the journey. There are several things you need to look out for before choosing your queue. Families with small children, unconventional luggage (which is likely to be inspected), and people with body language that signals they haven’t been through security in 10 years are good to avoid.
5. Get yourself a boarding routine. Collect everything you need on board (books, magazines, crosswords, etc.) in a single bag, which is easily accessible in your hand luggage. Once you have found your seat, you can easily take out the bag and sit comfortably in your seat.
6. Develop specific eating and sleeping habits. Eat your fill before boarding – so you maximize the time you have to sleep.
If you need a good night’s sleep on the plane, get ready to sleep before the flight. This involves changing into a comfortable set of clothes and brushing your teeth before boarding begins.
It is also recommended to stay away from alcohol, coffee, too much sugar, and fatty meals, as these elements put the body’s system in the highest gear, and you will find it more difficult to relax.
